Longer buses still most popular Once again, buses longer than 35 feet hold the lead in the fleet composition, with 46,437 buses. This comprises 77% of the fleet mix total. NYCT makes up 8% of this figure with more than 4,000 buses in this category. Buses 35 feet or shorter comprise 15%, with 9,231 vehicles. A new question to this year’s survey asked the average age of buses in fleets. Among the 72 respondents, buses averaged 7.1 years. The Memphis (Tenn.) Area Transit Authority (No. 71) listed the lowest average bus age at 3.3 years. The Hamilton Street Railway (No. 81) in Hamilton, Ontario, and the Toronto
