Term 3 Volume 29 18 September 2013 College Newsletter

from the Principal... Dear Members of the College community I would like to congratulate our graduating Class of 2013 for the outstanding manner in which they celebrated their end of year. Their involvement at the Graduation Breakfast, Morning Tea, College Assembly, Graduation Mass and Dinner last Thursday was dignified and a source of great celebration. Thank you to the many staff and students for providing a special day for the graduates and their families. My sincere thanks to Fr Dave Austin OSA who celebrated the Graduation Mass at St Kieran’s, Manly Vale. Fr Dave was Rector at St Augustine’s College from 1983 to 1993 and is a valued friend and mentor to our College community. He is currently a member of the Good Counsel Priory in St Clair – we thank Fr Dave for celebrating and attending the Graduation Mass and celebrations. A special thanks to Frank Chiment, (Dean of Senior School), Marcela Lyall (EA to the Dean of Senior School), Beth Milne (Operations Assistant), Kirsty Begg (Year 12 Student Formation Leader), Daniel Fee (Year 11 Student Formation Leader) and Margaret McElhone (Mission Advisor), for their dedication and tireless work in organising this special Year 12 event. The boys commence their Higher School Certificate on October 14. We ask that you keep them in your prayers during the examination period.

2014 STUDENT LEADERSHIP – CEREMONY OF LIGHT During the Graduation Assembly last Thursday, we held the Ceremony of Light to witness the transfer of the 2013 Student Leadership to the Student Leaders elect for 2014. We are very pleased to announce the following positions of Student Leadership for the 2014 Year 12 cohort:

College Captain – Matthew Schofield

College Vice Captains – Lawrence Gay and James Lough

Head Prefect – Sean Murphy

The College congratulates Matthew, Lawrence, James and Sean on their appointments and is confident that they will follow in the successful path of our 2013 leaders. Ryan Maguire, Tim Schofield and Thomas Cleary are to be congratulated for their support, commitment and contribution to the College as student leaders during 2013. The Senior Prefects will be inducted at the first College assembly in Term 4 (October 15).

FR TONY BANKS OSA – ASSISTANT GENERAL OF THE AUGUSTINIAN ORDER Further to announcement of the appointment of the new Prior General of the Augustinian Order, Fr Alejandro Anton OSA, we are pleased to advise that our Prior Provincial, Fr Tony Banks OSA, has been appointed to Assistant General of the Augustinian Order. We congratulate Fr Tony on his new ministry and assure him of our continuing prayers of those to whom he serves.

The new General Council of the Augustinian Order: (left to right) Anthony Banks (AUS) - Assistant General, Patricio Villalba (QUI) - Assistant General, Alejandro Moral-Anton (HIS) - Prior General, Franz Klein (GER) - Assistant General, Joseph Farrell (VIL) - Vicar General & Luis Marin de San Martin (HIS) Assistant General. Not in picture is Edward Daleng (NIG) - Assistant General.

MUFTI DAY – DANNY HASLER MEMORIAL On Friday 20 September, a Gold Coin Mufti Day will be held at the College. The funds raised will enable our community to honour Danny Hasler through the provision of a Memorial Park Bench at Long Reef where Danny so often walked enjoying both the exercise and the beauty of his heartland. This initiative has been largely driven by a committed group of Year 11 parents and initiated by Jack Ryan, Year 9 student. As a community we are proud to be involved in this well-deserved and fitting memorial of Danny’s life.

PARENT COMMUNICATION Year 12 parents should have received, via email on August 29, a letter from Frank Chiment (Dean of Senior School), outlining end of year information for Year 12 students and their parents. The letter includes our reasonable expectations of the Year 12 seniors. Year 12 parents should have also received a letter from David Holland (Business Services Manager) requesting that all outstanding fees are finalised prior to September 20, 2013. The information contained in these letters is vitally important and we ask that all senior students and their parents read and discuss the details therein.

All parents will receive a special edition of the Communitas in the mail during the upcoming school holidays. This is our second Communitas publication for the year and certainly highlights the vibrancy of our community reported through spiritual, academic, sporting and cultural pursuits. My thanks to Vicki Lewis (Information Services Coordinator), Lianne Williams (Marketing Manager) and Matt Anglicas (Designer) for the production of this excellent publication.

Year 12 Exit Survey Last Friday all Year 12 students were emailed a Year 12 Exit Survey to be completed on line. We request that all boys complete this survey as soon as possible so that we may accumulate the necessary feedback for ‘Student Destination’ on our Annual Report. Any questions relating to this survey can be forward to Kirsty Begg, Year 12 Student Formation Leader [email protected].

Prayers Please continue your prayers for the Gray family, Tony O’Shea and David Gilbert.

A reminder for all students and families The school term concludes at 3.30pm on Friday, September 20. Thank you for all the work, support and assistance given to the College over this busy Term 3. Students return for Term 4 on Tuesday, October 8 in full summer uniform. We trust all families will enjoy a relaxing and peaceful holiday period where once again we can spend some special time with family and friends.

Reflection Prayer for our Graduating Class of 2013 Teach me, O Lord To aim high and not be content with mediocrity; To set my sights on noble goals; To have a brave heart, a clear vision; To prize the things that are worthwhile; To always have the courage to choose what is right; To despise what is petty; To shun all selfishness; To have a heart that is strong and brave and pure and happy, Gentle yet courageous, So that under your guidance And with your grace, I may always and in all things Have as my motto— Vincit Veritas. Truth Conquers.

Tim Cleary

Principal

from the Head of School... Vale class 2013 There is perhaps no more poignant moment in the annual calendar of events at St Augustine’s College than the time signalling the departure of our senior students. Last week witnessed the end of formal lessons for our graduating class of 2013 and there was a varied and entertaining programme of activities during the week to celebrate and mark their final week as school students in a formal sense. Our boys completed their formal schooling with dignity, good humour and appropriate celebration. The Year 12 Mothers and Sons Mass, the farewell assembly, the Graduation Mass and Dinner, are part and parcel of the rich traditions of our school. These activities bring to the forefront of our thinking the importance of community and the personal friendships and relationships that develop within the school over the years amongst parents, students and staff. We have acknowledged the graduating class of 2013 for the great support and encouragement that the school received from them in general, in relation to meeting considerable challenges faced in any student’s final year at secondary school. It is my observation that the vast majority of our seniors this year have responded in a very mature fashion to the pressures of their final year and they have led the school in fine style, giving of their best in all their undertakings. In doing so, they have been a credit to their families and the school. For this, I believe, they deserve not only our best wishes for their final examinations but our sincere thanks and praise for a job well done.

Student Leadership Student leadership brings opportunity and privilege to influence the culture and tone of a school community. It is vital to engendering a spirit and character into a school. St Augustine’s College looks to our senior students to lead by example in faith, service, behaviour, studies, relationships and involvement in the co-curricular programme. My hope is that the entire Year 12 student body of 2014 willingly accept the baton of leadership from their predecessors. The senior student leaders for 2014 participated in the Ceremony of Light at the Year 12 Graduation Assembly last week. As a community we look forward to witnessing their leadership through service, participation and by example. Captain Vice Captain Vice Captain Head Prefect

Matthew Schofield James Lough Lawrence Gay Sean Murphy

In 2013, Ryan Maguire carried the sound tradition of captaincy of the College and has more than lived up to the excellent leadership given by College Captains over the years. Ryan has been superbly supported by Vice Captain Tim Schofield and Head Prefect Tom Cleary who have been highly effective, humble and whose loyalty to the College has been greatly appreciated and admired. All have served with great distinction.

I know some of our parents have difficulty dealing with the challenges that arise in their son’s motivation and study life. When it comes to student motivation, I am an optimist and believe in a boy’s ability to change. Furthermore, I believe in a parent’s ability to help them do this. What we are aiming for are students who are motivated and who are academically resilient. Academic resilience is the ability to effectively deal with setbacks, pressure and study stress while still having the energy and enthusiasm to try hard and study effectively. Parents play a significant role in developing and nurturing their son’s academic resilience. The Year 12 journey is one with many twists and turns. The ride, in most parts, is enjoyable and one that witnesses the growth of a young man in their academic, social, physical, emotional and spiritual formation.

Diane Lowe – Long Service Leave College Psychologist, Diane Lowe will be on Long Service Leave in Term 4. In her absence, a counsellor, Narelle Brigden, will be at the College on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please direct all issues to the Student Services Centre during this time.

Foundation Spring Party

On Friday 18 October during the 2nd week of Term 4 the Foundation Spring Party will be held in the Great Hall, International College of Management Sydney (ICMS) at Manly, commencing at 7.00pm. This promises to be a brilliant night as we gather to celebrate a wonderful first year of the College Foundation. Tickets are limited so please book now to avoid disappointment. During the evening, performer and singer Samantha Shaw and the talented Old Boys Band led by Joseph Montz, Performing Arts Co-ordinator, will provide the entertainment. Old Boy and TV presenter, Dr Andrew Rochford will be our MC. During the evening a variety of auctions and raffles will be conducted. I invite you to join us at this exciting fundraising event and in doing so, help to support many of the fantastic educational initiatives we are undertaking at the College.

Congratulations Congratulations to the Athletics squad who won the Division One ISA Track and Field Chmpionship last week for the first time. The team won the junior division and came second in both the intermediate and senior divisions, winning the overall competition.

2014 Year 12 Parent and Son Information Evening

Once again the past term has been a busy one, full of opportunities and experiences to broaden the lives of the boys in our care. At our first assembly this term, the boys were asked to consider the effort they had invested into their learning and the resulting outcome. The boys were asked to take note of ‘what worked’ for them and strategies they needed to employ to get improved outcomes. We are truly blessed with the culture at St Augustine’s College where our boys will take time to discuss and consider such things.

As we farewell the graduating class of 2013, our attention turns to the senior students of 2014 as they prepare to commence their HSC studies beginning in Term Four this year. An exciting year awaits the boys, and despite pressures of expectation, most find it to be the most enjoyable year of their school life.

A reminder that all students are expected to return on day one of Term Four, Tuesday 8 October, in full summer uniform with their hair cut to College requirements. I ask that this is attended to before school recommences, rather than a day or two into the term. Many thanks in anticipation of your support of this expectation.

Year 12 is about perspective and balance. Study, exercise, possible part-time work, social life, and down time are all important ingredients to manage in what will be a busy 12 months ahead. The success of a student’s final outcome is the responsibility of all and reflects the partnership between family, staff and student. For our 2014 graduates, it is about a commitment to do their best and utilise the opportunities that present themselves. It is about boys respecting the learning environment, developing good organisational skills, working in groups supporting their peers and placing high expectations on themselves.

Our work as teachers is ‘privileged’ work and we thank you for entrusting your sons in our care. I wish all parents, boys and staff a happy and safe holiday, one where there is time for rest, for reading and catching up with friends. I hope the boys return to the College reinvigorated for another busy term ahead.

Matthew Hutchison

Head of School

from the Dean of Middle School... I would like to wish all our Middle School families a safe and relaxing holiday. In so many ways this last term has been full and rewarding. Our winter sports finished on a positive note culminating in excellent, well-attended presentation nights. Last week saw our Year 12 class Graduate and we also celebrated a worthy year in the Performing Arts. St Augustine’s College offers so many opportunities in which the boys can excel and enjoy and I believe the finished product that we showcase is of an extraordinary standard. Term 4 resumes on Tuesday 8 October and it will be important for your sons to rest well over the break, take the time to look ahead at what will be expected in terms of course content and assessments and return to school eager and enthusiastic to complete the year on a positive note. Please take note that when the boys return, summer uniform is worn. All families should ensure that boys have a decent, short haircut, polished shoes, and that belts are worn and wrists are free from jewellery.

Andres Trujillo will be Year 7 Student Formation Leader and an Assistant for Year 7 will be arranged early next term.

Dean of Middle School

from the Dean of Primary School... I wish all families a safe and restful break over the next two weeks. The boys and teachers deserve a well earned respite from their studies and hard work and spending quality time with family is the perfect remedy. I would like to thank all parents for the way you have your boys ready and organised to start each day. The positive partnership with your class teachers ensures that all boys receive the same messages about behaviour, responsibility and relationships. I look forward to seeing all the boys return safely, injury free in their Summer uniform, to what promises to be another term of innovative and creative learning. School commences on the 8th October.

Technology I have spoken to the boys on numerous occasions about the appropriate and discerning use of technology. What is concerning is the downloading of games which I consider to be age inappropriate for boys in Primary School. Could I ask that no boys have games which are not educational bought to the College. It is very timely that our yearly visit from Healthy Harold will concentrate on sensible choices.

Reading Holidays are the perfect time to get into the habit of regular reading and I encourage all boys to go to the library, borrow a book or save their pocket money and buy a book to read. By the end of the holidays I hope all boys will have a favourite author or a favourite book they can tell me about. Take up the challenge and read everyday for a better life!!!

Writing For those budding authors, the holidays are also a time to keep a journal or diary and write your thoughts down each day. You may even begin to write your own Narratives, Science Fiction or Fantasy stories. I would love to receive some published stories upon our return to the College after the holidays. Who knows, we may have the next Maurice Gleitzman, Anthony Horrowitz or John O’ Brien in our midst.

Study Skills Study tips for students from students Almost there… Elevate Education provides study skills information to our students in regular seminars throughout the year. Their presenters are all university students who offer the following tips and insights to HSC students. •

Mind maps in exams – Normally, when the examiner says, ‘you may start writing’ people go bananas trying to write as much and as quickly as possible. Instead, I would draw up an essay structure and write down the start of the quotes I was going to use. I learned it was better to write a well structured essay than write whatever came into my head. I was more likely to remember quotes in the first few minutes of the exam than when I was frantically trying to finish an essay. Adam studies International/Global Studies at Sydney University.

Keep it simple – Write honestly and simply – write as if you are speaking directly to the examiner – in other words, write an essay the examiner will understand and, most importantly, will enjoy reading! Harry studies Arts/Laws University of Sydney

Teamwork – nothing helped me as much as working with my peers – one mate and I who was a similar standard in English, worked together, bouncing ideas off one another, writing whole essays and comparing them. We evaluated, analysed, discussed, compared and contrasted until we were sick of each other but both had English as our best subject. Tim studies Arts/ Law Melbourne University

The power of practice – for me, practice papers were the most powerful study tool. When studying for exams, in the first week I would do a practice paper - open book, open time. In the second week I would do a practice paper closed book, open time. Final week I would do it under exam conditions. I often did this with friends and discussed the answers afterwards – a great way to share ideas. Dan – Juris Doctor at Monash University

Mix it up - I liked to exercise and hated being indoors so I put my notes, as audio files, on my IPod and went for long walks, revising for my exams at the same time. Andrew studies Media and Communications RMIT

Plan – do not underestimate the importance of list making and planning. I wrote a list every afternoon of tasks still to be done. It is a relief to write down what you have to do to clear your mind of stress and anxiety. Write next to the task a day and time to complete it – Lily studies Arts/Law at Monash University

Sleep – do not cram the night before – it’s a waste of time. Spend it instead relaxing and resting – stop at 5pm as cramming till 3am is the easiest way to mess up an exam – Sam studies Commerce Law at USYD

Give yourself time - For me, I have found that having a few days where you exclusively focus on one or two subjects has worked well. These days are also great for study groups. Conor studies Arts at Melbourne University

Break it up – when studying for long periods of time, even a quick walk around the block every hour wakes you up and gets the blood flowing. Drink LOTS of water and keep the windows open for fresh air in a well lit room while you are studying. Anna studies Arts/Law at UNSW

Congratulations to the U13’s Manly United team. They played their Grand Final in the Football NSW Youth League last weekend. Unfortunately, they were defeated 2- 1 by Sutherland but still an outstanding result to make that final. The St Augustine’s students playing in that team are Finn Ashton, Aiden Bariol, Oscar Casteigt, Nick Corcoran, Ben Varvaressos and Ben Koop. Well Done!!

Champion of Champion’s ST AUGUSTINE’S CRICKET TRIVIA NIGHT Last Saturday evening, the St Augustine’s College Cricket Club held its official season launch ‘friend raiser’ evening along with a trivia night in the St Mary MacKillop Centre. CRICKETERS OF THE WEEK Well done to Nick Hidas of the U16/17 Greens who belted an unbeaten 92 on Saturday morning against Beacon Hill CC to guide his team to 7/252 from its 30 overs. Nick smashed 12 boundaries and 3 huge sixes to anchor the huge total. Well batted Nick! The U12 Div 2 Greens Mitchell McNaughton made 36 retired not out with the bat including 4 magnificent boundaries and lots of hard running 2’s and 3’s. Mitchell then backed this up taking a wicket in his 3 overs bowled. Great work, Mitchell! James Scholtens

MIGHTY MURRAY MAKE IT A TRIFECTA

Semi Finals Friday 6 September: St Augustine’s F v St. Luke’s Yellow Lost 3-10 St Augustine’s M v Balgowlah Drew 5-5

For the first time in several years the traditional House Relay found itself back at Brookvale Oval. In front of a crowd of 1300 people the Murray House took out the prestigious event in a nail biting finish, narrowly defeating Goold, Reville and Crane in that order.

I was also able to present awards to our three Junior teams at the Middle School Assembly this week.  Congratulations to all boys involved in Junior water polo this term and particularly to the award winners.

Junior The Junior (Year 7) competition concluded on Friday 6 September, with two out of the three St. Augustine’s teams featuring.  In the first match St. Augustine’s F came up against Minor Premiers St. Luke’s Yellow.  St. Augustine’s played a high level of water polo, but one or two stand-out players for St. Lukes were able to score multiple goals despite being closely marked and at full-time, the score was 3-10 to St. Luke’s.  In the second semi-final, St. Augustine’s M came up against Balgowlah.  St. Augustine’s got away to a great start and led at every break.  With a minute to go, St. Augustine’s were holding onto a 5-4 lead when Balgowlah equalised.  St. Augustine’s went straight on to attack, but time was up and Balgowlah progressed to the final as they had finished higher on the competition table.  A great game of water polo from both teams
