Description

While much of the Clubs’ emotional impact cannot be quantified, the purpose of this study was to measure the impact in terms of cost saving as well as the creation of income brought about by greater productivity of members of the community who benefit from its operation. Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Today, more than ever, youth seem to have daily opportunities to make negative choices that can affect their lives and the lives of their families and their communities for years to come. Those of us who work with kids at our 25 Club locations every day, see the enormous difference we can make– especially in the lives of kids at risk, kids who need us the most. We have felt and experienced those positive results in a very personal way and now, with the help of Dr. Jamshid Damooei of CLU and the Economic Impact Report, we have solid, proof positive of the profound impact of the Club on our kids and our community. A year ago, we partnered with Dr. Damooei to conduct a study on the amount of money the community saves in future social programs by investing in children through the Boys & Girls Clubs. The results of “Economic Impact of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme on the Community: A Study of the Return in Investing in Our Children” were released with fantastic findings: For every dollar spent at the Club, four dollars are saved, a 400 percent return on investment.

Though the study measured six areas, three stood out as particularly exceptional: preventing teen pregnancy, reducing crime and raising graduation rates. We have included some of those results in this yearly review and highlighted the programs, members and Club alumni who are outstanding examples of why we are able to positively change lives in very real ways and with the generous support of our volunteers and donors. The children in our community are worthy of our time, commitment and dedication. When we listen, we learn, and our kids grow in confidence, competence and selfesteem. With your help, we can continue to teach a generation that they are valued and that, with our help, they can turn any negative they are given into a positive, for themselves and for their communities. To our stakeholders, volunteers, board members, friends, collaborating partners and donors, we offer our yearly review for 2008—a profoundly successful year. Thank you for helping us make positive change for all our children! Respectfully,

Tim Blaylock Chief Professional Officer Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme

Our Formula for Success Since 1954, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme has provided a safe place for local youth to believe, belong and be great. Our 25 Club sites serve more than 7,000 members annually and an average of 1,300 youth daily. Our caring and committed staff encourages kids to be part of a community that cares about one thing – making anything and everything possible for every youth, every day.

Daniel Diaz: Youth of the Year At just 15, Daniel was chosen as the Club’s 2008 Youth of the Year. The prestigious award recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. Daniel, a sophomore at Oxnard High School, joined the club at 9 years old, is a member of the leadership program and volunteers his time at the Club’s fundraisers. The youngest of his siblings and the son of a single mother, Daniel and his family recently went through some difficult times after his mother lost her job of 11 years. They were evicted from their apartment and the family car was totaled. Despite hardship, Daniel showed dedication, love and loyalty to his mother and was the “light at the end of the tunnel” and her “rock.” Daniel notes, “My mother has been a constant source of inspiration in my life.” “Some say leaders are born in times of crisis. Daniel has proven that through difficulty, he can not only persevere, but inspire. He is truly an exemplary member of this community, and we are fortunate to have him here at the Club,” said Tim Blaylock, CPO of the Club.

Investing in our children through the Club has proven to make a difference and, as the 2008 Economic Impact Report measured, for every dollar spent at the Club, four dollars are saved in future social programs.*

John Crombach: Chief of Police, Oxnard John Crombach, a 30-year veteran of Ventura County law enforcement, remembers his first experience at the Boys & Girls Club in Oceanside, California, as a place to have a great time with a wood shop, rock polishing shop and billiards. Later, as a member of the Vista, California Club he built his first skim board and says the club gave kids something constructive to do. Now as a member of our board of directors, he reflects on the incredible benefit of the Club. He believes things are much different today, and that now more than ever, we need a place where kids can go—a safe place where they can be exposed to positive influences.

Club Members Honor César Chávez

New Music Program Strikes Chord with Students

Nearly two dozen members and Rio School District students honored the life of César Chávez by joining the César E. Chávez After-School Service Learning Club. The kids met three days a week at Rio del Valle Middle School to hear about the life and values of Chávez, examine the needs of their local community and create projects to address those needs. They focused on feeding the homeless and handing out bottled water to local farm workers, and they participated in local events and rallies.

The Club teamed up with Rio School District to form the Voices of Hope choir and Children’s Philharmonic Orchestra. The choir is comprised of around 130 members and the orchestra has nearly 40 members. Under the leadership of Maestro Edin Dino Zonic and his colleague, choir performer/ director Julia Zonic, the group has continued to grow since its founding in fall 2007. The choir held its first performance at the 2007 Black & White Gala and reprised its role for the 2008 event. The director, along with Club assistants, visits the Rio schools semiweekly for 45-60 minute lessons, and everyone meets together every other Friday to rehearse.

Families Enjoy Day for Kids More than 2,000 children and their families celebrated the third annual Day for Kids on September 20, a national event to build stronger relationships between adults and kids. The local celebration, hosted by the City of Oxnard and Kaiser Permanente, included Sprinkles the Clown, a PartiAnimalz petting zoo, reptile and bird shows, arts and crafts, games, face painting and a rock wall. Peace Thru Music and Q104.7 FM presented the “Teens Unite for Peace Concert” and the Estrada Brothers performed.

Angelica Avalos: Hard-Working College Student & Scholarship Winner Angelica Avalos, 19, is a shining example of how you can overcome challenging odds with focus and a positive attitude. One of five children of a single mom, in a neighborhood where gangs and drugs prevail, she made the choice to continue her education and work to contribute to the family finances. Angelica joined the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP), where she displayed exceptional computer skills. The Club helped her get a job at a local small business and she now works as an administrative assistant for the YEP program. Angelica obtained her GED, and is studying at Oxnard College for her associate’s degree with her long-term sights set on a law degree. She recently received a $1,000 Dwight Brydie Scholarship and, in her spare time, this tireless achiever gives back to the community as a tutor at the La Colonia Housing Authority.

Marta Avalos: Music Student Extraordinaire Marta Avalos, a fourth-grader at Rio Plaza School, comes from a low-income, Spanish-speaking family that sacrifices everything to keep her involved in music. She emulates perfect attendance, leadership and dedication to honing her craft—all virtues that earned her commendations in December, along with a gold music necklace and framed certificate of achievement worth four free private vocal lessons. Her sister, who is in the fifth grade, also is involved in the music program, and together they offer help wherever they can, sharing the joys and experiences in their lives. By overcoming environmental limitations, Marta and her family excel at being influential and heartwarming role models to children and adults alike.

Club Kids Set Sail The Fairwind Yacht Club’s Sailing Program kicked off on June 24, launching an opportunity for hundreds of members to learn how to sail safely, many of whom have never been to the beach. The Club partnered with the yacht club, as well as DR Horton and Clearwater Port, to bring members ages 10 to 18 to the Seabridge Marina in Oxnard.

Black & White Gala Raises $200,000 The Club’s largest special event fundraiser of the year, the Black & White Gala, 19th Annual Donald K. Facciano KidsAuction, was a resounding success, bringing in $200,000 on November 15 for the Club’s 25 sites and 7,200 kids. Raffle winners were awarded 200 cash prizes of $150,000-$186,000 and a Harley Davidson motorcycle during the four raffle drawings.

“It Just Takes One” Campaign for Kids Breakfast The sixth annual event featured special guest Courtney B. After retiring from the International Teamsters Union Local #186 in Ventura, Velasquez began volunteering for community commissions and organizations, serving as the first vicechairman of the City of Oxnard Homeless Commission and the current chair of the Fremont South Neighborhood Council. He has been married to his wife Betty for 43 years and has two sons, Al Jr. and Michael, and two grandsons, Angel and Gabriel.

Keary Colbert: Detroit Lions’ Wide Receiver, Port Hueneme Alumnus Keary Colbert expressed his appreciation for his years at the Port Hueneme Club with a significant contribution of $65,000 to the “One Campaign,” which benefits youth programs at the Clubs. A 2000 graduate of Hueneme High School, Keary played football for USC before moving on to the pros. His mother, Berma, movingly explained the impact BGCOP had on her son, “The Club provided an avenue for Keary to be around other kids (his brother was 12 years older and living away from home) and to compete in athletics with some of the best players in Ventura County. He enjoyed going there every day, including weekends, and the Club staff really reinforced the discipline we worked so hard to instill at home.”
